Kempten is the largest and most central city in the Allgäu in Bavaria with around 70,000 inhabitants. It dates from Roman times and is one of the oldest cities in Germany with around 2,000 years of history. Kempten is located in the foothills of the Alps at an average of 700 meters above sea level and is the second highest city in Germany of the larger German cities. Kempten is an independent medium-sized town and in the administrative region of Swabia the second largest city after Augsburg. It is also known as the capital of the Allgäu or the Allgäu metropolis, as Kempten is one of the economically strongest cities in Germany.
